Local legend has it that, when Vietnam was attacked from the sea, the Jade Emperor sent a family of Dragons to help the Vietnamese fight against invaders. Those dragons flew down upon where is now Halong Bay and spat countless pearls into the sea, which turned into a myriad of jade islands linking together to form a barrier against the invaders, and helped the Vietnamese defend their land. Therefore, the area where the Dragons landed was called Halong Bay, or Bay of Descending Dragons.

Venture off to the Cave of Surprises (Sung Sot Cave) located on Bo Hon Island, which is actually a set of linked limestone islets. The largest grotto in Halong Bay, the cave features fascinating formations created over time, including multiple stalactites hanging from its high ceiling. Enjoy the sunset and late afternoon atmosphere on the deck, dinner and overnight on boat.

Depending on the weather and sea conditions, you may cruise to Ho Ba Ham cove – a lagoon wrapped with limestone walls and connected to the sea by three low-ceiling tunnels, or to Three Peach area. Both of these are great spots for kayaking. You are free to kayak as much or as little as you like, most travelers enjoy paddling around for two hours in the morning and two hours in the afternoon.

Halong Bay is actually a center of a large zone, which includes Bai Tu Long Bay to the northeast, and Lan Ha Bay to the southwest. These bays share similar geological and cultural characters, but the density of smaller islets and hidden lagoons make them even more attractive.
